Mailvelope is a browser extension that adds PGP (OpenPGP) end‑to‑end encryption to webmail. If you enable it in GARMTECH.Email, you can encrypt messages so only the recipient with the correct private key can read them.
Important: encryption is not the same as a password reset. If you lose your private key or its passphrase, encrypted messages cannot be recovered.
Before you start
- You need access to your mailbox in GARMTECH.Email.
- You need a supported browser where you can install extensions (for example, Chrome/Chromium or Firefox).
- Your recipient must also use PGP and provide you their public key.
1) Install Mailvelope
- Open your browser’s extension store (Chrome Web Store or Firefox Add‑ons).
- Search for Mailvelope and install it.
- After installation, you should see the Mailvelope icon in the browser toolbar.
2) Create or import your PGP key
- Click the Mailvelope icon → open settings/key management.
- Choose one option:
- Generate a new key (recommended for new users): enter your name and your email address, then set a strong passphrase.
- Import an existing key: paste or upload your existing key files.
Save your passphrase in a secure place (for example, a password manager).
3) Share your public key
To receive encrypted emails, people need your public key.
- Export your public key from Mailvelope and send it to the recipient.
- Or publish it in a safe way used by your organization.
4) Send an encrypted email from GARMTECH.Email
- Open GARMTECH.Email and click Compose.
- Make sure you have already imported the recipient’s public key into Mailvelope.
- Use Mailvelope’s encryption button in the editor (the exact button depends on your browser and plugin version).
- Write your message in the encryption editor and encrypt it.
- Send the email as usual.
5) Read encrypted emails
When an encrypted message arrives, Mailvelope will offer a decrypt option. You will be asked for your passphrase to unlock your private key.
Security notes
- PGP encryption usually does not hide the email subject. Avoid putting sensitive data in the subject line.
- Protect your device with a strong password and keep your browser updated.
- Back up your private key securely if you need long‑term access to encrypted archives.
