GARMTECH Cloud Storage (powered by Nextcloud) can sync to your computer using the desktop client. If your storage is large, you can use selective sync (sync only chosen folders) and, where supported, virtual files to save disk space.

What “selective sync” does

  • You choose which folders are synchronized to your computer.
  • Folders you deselect will stop syncing. Depending on the client/version, they may also be removed from the local sync folder (the data stays in Cloud Storage).

Change what is synced (selective sync)

  1. Open the Cloud Storage desktop client.
  2. Click your account/connection (or open Settings).
  3. Find the option Choose what to sync / Selective sync.
  4. Check/uncheck folders you want to sync.
  5. Apply the changes.

Tip: If you want to keep a local copy but stop syncing it, move that folder outside the sync directory.

Offline files and “virtual files” (availability)

Some desktop client versions support “virtual files” (sometimes called availability): files appear in your sync folder but are downloaded only when you open them.

  • Use this when you want quick access to a large library without downloading everything.
  • Mark important folders/files as Always available offline (wording depends on OS/client) to keep them downloaded.

Where is my sync folder?

  • The desktop client usually creates a dedicated local folder (for example, Nextcloud or Cloud Storage inside your user profile).
  • You can view or change the local sync folder path in the client settings for the account connection.

Recommended workflows

  • Laptop with limited disk: use virtual files + keep only key folders offline.
  • Workstation: selective sync to keep projects local and synced.
  • Shared team folders: sync only what you actively work on to reduce conflicts and storage usage.

Troubleshooting notes

  • If a folder does not appear, check that you have permissions to it in Cloud Storage.
  • If changes do not sync, confirm the client is logged in and synchronization is not paused.
  • Large initial sync can take time depending on your connection and file count.
